There is a time and a place for movies that offer plenty of food for thought (this probably fits in better with the next movie…)—and there are also those times when you just want to sit back with a medium bag of popcorn (and some Junior Mints) and have some fun. I was pretty sure that The Fall Guy would provide that opportunity, and I wasn’t disappointed (for the most part). Written by Drew Pearce and directed by Brian Leitch partly as a tribute to stunt performers, and inspired by the 1980s Lee Majors series, this Fall Guy stars the red-hot (from his time on Barbie) Ryan Gosling as Colt, experienced stuntman for an arrogant star (Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Tom Ryder) and Emily Blunt (from Oppenheimer) as Jody, a camerawoman who also happens to be Colt’s girlfriend. An early near-fatal mishap sets the scene for a withdrawn, recuperating Colt to be led back into service by producer Gail Meyer (scene-stealing Guyman Casady), supposedly at the behest of a not-too-bitter Jody. However, Colt’s arrival on a Sydney film shoot (with Jody as director) proves to be more complicated, and dangerous, than first anticipated—especially when Ryder, the film’s star, mysteriously disappears. Needless to say, The Fall Guy has plenty of plot complications (murder, betrayal, unrequited love, missed connections) but what kept me in my seat (besides the need to finish my popcorn) was primarily the chemistry between Gosling and Blunt. The two are pitch-perfect, both separately and together (though one wishes there were more of Blunt—she’s radiant and delivers a nicely judged performance). Some of their scenes work beautifully despite their not being in the same literal space (with a knowing nod to other movies that utilize the split-screen). Gosling brings Cole to life with a blend of energy, comic-timing, and introspection—not to mention intensity in the well-staged action sequences. These sequences strive to be both exciting and plausible—and most work on that level, though the film has one breakneck sequence too many (if you see it, you’ll know what I mean). In spite of this small caveat (and this last sequence does give Blunt the opportunity to join in the action), I would recommend seeing Fall Guy on a big screen. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Comedy can be awfully subjective, in terms of one’s reaction. (Perhaps you’ve been that one person who didn’t laugh when an entire theater is convulsed—or vice-versa, and the stony-faced patrons around you wish you would stop laughing—at a comedy, no less.) I’ve seen some sharply divided reaction to Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted, or the “true story” of the birth of Pop-Tarts. Seinfeld directed (and co-wrote) this fanciful depiction (with a few grains of truth) about how a new breakfast treat was created despite opposition from various cereal companies, internal friction—and an unnecessary death. And I’ll tell you, some of it meanders, some of it doesn’t work, but more often than not, I was watching (it’s on Netflix) with a smile on my face. Seinfeld…well, is Seinfeld, but it’s interesting to see him play someone who cares (a little) about something, Hugh Grant makes a welcome appearance as the voice of Tony the Tiger, who simmers after he learns he has been lied to by management, Amy Schumer and Jim Gaffigan have fun as rival cereal executives, as does Melissa McCarthy as an enterprising food scientist. There are moments that made me laugh out loud, and I suspect you will too. Give it a try. It doesn’t cost anything—provided you’re a Netflix subscriber.

Last year’s Barbenheimer was hailed as saving cinema. Now takings are down and even franchises are falling flat. Can Hollywood manoeuvre itself out of this disaster zone? In Hollywood, the first weekend of May is traditionally seen as the official kick-off of the summer movie season: an auspicious blockbuster date that has, of late, become rather a boring one. Since 2007, when Spider-Man 3 (three full cycles ago in that deathless franchise) topped the box office – and barring two years where the global pandemic threw the mainstream release schedule into disarray – that weekend has been the exclusive domain of Marvel superhero adaptations, through to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 claiming the No 1 spot last May. That stranglehold was set to continue this year, with the legacy-milking superhero mash-up comedy Deadpool & Wolverine scheduled for a 3 May release. It doubtless would have creamed the competition, too, had last year’s Hollywood strikes not delayed it to July. And so, with the coveted early-May date open to a cape-free blockbuster for the first time since the Bush administration, Universal spotted an opportunity for its action romcom The Fall Guy, about a Hollywood stunt man tangled in an insider conspiracy. They had reason to be confident. Ryan Gosling was riding a wave of public goodwill after his film-stealing turn in last year’s top grosser Barbie; pairing him with Emily Blunt, fresh from her appearance in Barbie’s summer sibling Oppenheimer, was a neat marketing angle the stars gamely launched as a presenting duo at the Oscars in March. Two days later, the film premiered to jubilant audience reactions at the hip SXSW festival. It seemed director David Leitch, who drove the comparably goofy action flick Bullet Train to a $240m gross in 2022, had another hit on his hands. Or not, as it turned out. The Fall Guy opened modestly in the US, taking a little over $27m in its first weekend. At the time of writing, it’s made nearly $108m worldwide – not a bomb, but not a palpable hit either. Reviews have been solid; audience scores are good. All indications are that it’s a crowdpleaser, at least for the medium-sized crowds that are showing up. But why aren’t they bigger? It comes down to the dreaded letters IP, or intellectual property: the pre-established brands, story worlds and characters on which the vast majority of big-budget studio movies are sold these days, to the detriment of original screenplays and untested ideas. Technically, The Fall Guy is an adaptation, loosely drawn from an ABC television series that aired from 1981 to 1986. However, the IP in this case has lingered so little in the public imagination that Leitch’s film may as well be an original property. Universal instead marketed the film on star power and the promise of a good, fun time – a deal ticket-buyers were willing to take in the 90s but are warier of now. Everybody loves Gosling, but they love him most when he’s playing a character as recognisable and meme-ready as Barbie’s Ken; he may work the same vein of self-deprecating himbo comedy in The Fall Guy, but action-man Colt Seavers doesn’t have the same allure. Getting audiences to invest in characters that they haven’t previously met remains the toughest game in Hollywood Universal had reason to think they might turn back the clock. The story of last year’s summer box office was the aforementioned Barbie–Oppenheimer double – disparate films that turned the rather banal fact of a shared release date into a wildly successful marketing gimmick, as audiences fashioned “Barbenheimer” into a double-feature roadshow with little official prompting from the studios. The films were not exactly original: Barbie was a corporation-backed spin-off vehicle for Mattel’s most iconic toy line; Oppenheimer a biopic of a much-discussed historical figure. But they were, in the current blockbuster landscape, bracingly unconventional.

When Rupert Wyatt's 2011 prequel "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" revived a five-decade-old franchise—one that spanned books, films, TV series, and comics since the '60s—it did so with a refreshing commitment to a powerful, timeless story: simple but not simple-minded, deeply emotional but far from corny. Portrayed via groundbreaking performance capture technology by Andy Serkis (delivering the kind of actorly nuance that shouldn’t have been overlooked by The Academy), the film’s Ape protagonist Caesar has led that story through the two sequels, both of them elegantly directed by Matt Reeves—2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Raised by James Franco’s caring human hands in the first film, Caesar quickly broke through the classist and discriminatory human world’s self-destructive greed in the trilogy and claimed his deserving place as the leader of his kind, while a manmade virus made Apes smarter, and robbed humans of their intelligence and speech abilities, nearly eradicating mankind. As a whole, the trilogy became perhaps the finest franchise of this century, standing tall against the loud, bloated mega-verses and unexpectedly reminding us what we want from big-budget, sequel-minded Hollywood: something thoughtful, entertaining and insightful about who we are and aspire to be. The new film, “The Maze Runner” director Wes Ball’s brilliant “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” walks securely in the footsteps of this recent legacy, wearing the Caesar-centric films’ values like fairness, loyalty and communal solidarity on its sleeve with pride. Like its predecessors, Ball’s sequel knows these principles don’t belong to humans exclusively—not in his highly imaginative sci-fi adventure, not in the real world where the animal kingdom lives by its own set of rules and ethics. And along with his screenwriter Josh Friedman (of the wonderful “Avatar: The Way of Water,” with which you will notice plenty of visual and thematic parallels here), Ball confidently puts forth a film that is exciting and visually articulate in its action setpieces as it is thoughtfully coherent in its plotting. In “Kingdom,” there is not a single wasted idea or scene that feels randomly introduced without a soundly rewarding payoff that deepens and completes story. In other words, here’s a film—well, a franchise—where you see smart writers and filmmakers at work towards bringing things full circle, not meeting rooms dedicated to soulless fan-servicing. The tale of “Kingdom” is set generations after the events of the “War,” after the time of Caesar. Young chimpanzees Noa (Owen Teague), Anaya (Travis Jeffery), and Soona (Lydia Peckham) of the Eagle Clan—all also portrayed via performance capture—climb massive heights at the start of the film so that Noa can find an eagle egg of his own per his clan’s rituals and bond with the majestic bird over the years like the elderly of his world. After a beautifully shot, eventful escapade nearly costing him his life, the fearless Noa manages to claim his egg from a nest.
